Russia coach Guus Hiddink paid tribute to his Spanish counterpart Luis Aragones here Wednesday on the eve of their Euro 2008 semi-final.

Hiddink, speaking at the pre-match press conference, described the veteran Spaniard as a big man in international football.

Win, lose or draw Aragones will relinquish his national duties in favour of managing Turkish giants Fernabahce next season, a side previosuly coached by Hiddink.

The Chelsea midfielder suffered an injury to his right calf and missed training on Friday and Saturday. Instead, he received treatment at the hotel.

Martin O Neill has signed a two-year contract extension to remain as Republic of Ireland manager until 2020.

O Neill guided Ireland to the play-off stage of qualifying for the 2018 World Cup but saw his side beaten by Denmark as they were thrashed 5-1 in the second leg in Dublin having claimed a goalless draw in the first leg.

The former Leicester City, Celtic and Aston Villa boss had been linked with the managerial post at Stoke City, but reportedly turned that down before the Potters opted to appoint Paul Lambert.

And he will now lead Ireland in the newly formed Nations League and qualifying for Euro 2020.

Manchester United s David de Gea has hit out at his critics, claiming he is a much better player than when he first arrived in England.

De Gea has struggled to fully convince as Manchester United s goalkeeper since arriving from Atletico Madrid in a record-breaking 18 million pound in 2011.

But the 22-year-old Spaniard believes there was always going to be a tough transition period and he is convinced he has improved and is ready for a long career as Manchester United s number one.

When you move to a new club, new country and a different league you are going to have some hard times and moments when you are not at your best, De Gea said on Wednesday.

I think it is important to go through that to improve and make yourself stronger during hard times.

Former striker Predrag Mijatovic has backed Gareth Bale to save Real Madrid s season by scoring in the Champions League final.

The 10-time European champions will lock horns with city rivals Atletico Madrid in Saturday s decider in Milan, a rematch of the 2014 final in which the Wales international scored as Los Blancos won 4-1 after extra time.
